From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
300: Career wins for Wagner boys basketball coach Rodney Clark, who reached the mark during the Thunderbirds’ 75-55 triumph vs. Kerrville Tivy on Wednesday. Clark is in his 13th season as a head coach and guided Wagner to the UIL state tournament in 2017, 2019 and 2020. The Thunderbirds advanced to the state final in 2017 and 2019 but the state tournament was canceled before they could play their state semifinal contest because of the COVID pandemic in 2020. Clark has been at Wagner since the school opened in 2005, first serving as an assistant coach for seven seasons under Clifton Ellis and helping the team reach the state tournament in 2009 and 2010 behind future NBA players Jordan Clarkson and Andre Roberson.
37: Consecutive district matches won by the Alamo Heights girls soccer team before Wednesday’s 3-1 setback vs. Smithson Valley in District 26-5A play. It was the Mules’ first league loss since falling to Dripping Springs 3-0 on March 4, 2022. They won their final three district contests to conclude the 2022 season, went 16-0 in league competition during each of the past two campaigns, and started 2-0 this season.
26: Consecutive district matches won by the Johnson girls soccer team before Thursday’s 2-1 loss vs. Brandeis. The Jaguars hadn’t suffered a league setback since falling to Reagan 2-1 on Jan. 30, 2023. They have won back-to-back District 28-6A championships.
18: San Antonio-area teams that earned a spot in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches state rankings. Brennan is No. 1, Steele is No. 7 and Johnson is No. 22 in Class 6A. Wagner is No. 9 and Jay is No. 11 in 5A, Somerset is No. 11 and Davenport is No. 16 in 4A and Cole is No. 9 in 3A. On the girls side, Judson is No. 1, Steele is No. 23 and Churchill is No. 24 in 6A. Wagner is No. 7, McCollum is No. 12, Sam Houston is No. 13 and Pieper is No. 18 in 5A. Fredericksburg is No. 6 and Davenport is No. 21 in 4A. Jourdanton is No. 20 in 3A.
9: Three-pointers made by Cornerstone junior shooting guard Yasmeen Schmidt during the Warriors’ 61-28 win vs. Richland Springs on Jan. 17. The total is a school record, surpassing the previous mark of eight that Schmidt established vs. Pieper on Nov. 19, 2024.
5: Area athletes selected to the Texas High School Coaches Association Super Elite team for volleyball. Reagan’s Mya Allen made the Class 6A squad, New Braunfels’ Hayden Jeffers made the 5A team, Stockdale’s LeAnn Wise was the offensive player of the year on the 3A team and D’Hanis’ Jessa Frosch and Kylee Thompson are on the 1A squad.

State’s best: Boerne Champion junior Elizabeth Leachman was named Gatorade’s Texas girls cross country runner of the year. It was the second straight year that Leachman, who has captured the past two UIL Class 5A individual state championships, has earned the honor. In December, Leachman won the Foot Locker national cross country championships, becoming only the fifth athlete to win the event in back-to-back years.
Top Buffalo: The Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD board of trustees approved Alan Hill as head football coach/athletic coordinator at Clemens on Thursday. Hill had held both jobs on an interim basis after previous head coach Jared Johnston left for Orange Grove in May 2024. Hill was elevated from offensive coordinator. He previously was an assistant at Clark, Churchill and Smithson Valley. The Buffaloes finished 2-8 overall this past season.
