From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
1,000: Career points for Boerne’s Luke Whidbee and Alamo Heights’s Jeb Brysacz. Both are seniors. Brysacz reached the milestone during Wednesday’s 61-62 win vs. Kyle Lehman. Whidbee, a 6-foot-6 guard, notched the accomplishment during the Greyhounds’ 90-33 win vs. Floresville on Dec. 12.
300: Career wins for Lanier girls basketball coach Laura Negrete-Fernandez, who accomplished the feat during the Voks’ 56-47 triumph vs. Brackenridge on Dec. 30. Negrete-Fernandez is in her 21st season at Lanier.
250: Total wins for Alamo Heights boys basketball coach Andrew Brewer. He reached the mark during the Mules’ 85-57 decision vs. Southwest Legacy on Dec. 18. Brewer is in his 11th season, including his ninth at his alma mater. He previously coached at The Winston School in Dallas.
200: Victories for Saint Mary’s Hall boys basketball coach Barry Chamberlin during his 10 seasons at the school. Chamberlin reached the standard during the Barons’ 80-48 win vs. Austin Brentwood on Dec. 11.
14: Goals scored by the Davenport girls soccer team in its first varsity match vs. San Antonio Young Women’s Leadership Academy on Tuesday. The Wolves are coached by Ben Morrison, who previously was the boys coach at Waco Connally.
7: Days until the UIL allows softball teams across the state to conduct their first after-school workout. The first day for practice is Jan. 15. The season kicks off on Feb. 15, with the state tournament scheduled for June 2-5. The 2020 season was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, with most area teams having just started district play.
2: Area boys soccer teams that earned spots in Top Drawer’s top 25 preseason national rankings. LEE was listed in the publication’s top five and Central Catholic was among the teams rated from No. 11 through No. 25. Both were nationally ranked a year ago, with LEE sitting at No. 2 for most of the season. Because the coronavirus pandemic has affected the start date for seasons in several states, including California, Top Drawer has modified its rankings, cutting its usual top 50 in half, and will wait until the conclusion of the season to rank teams by number.
