From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:

By the numbers
1,000:
Career points for Cornerstone Christian senior forward Ben Wagner, who reached the mark during the Warriors’ 85-70 win vs. Great Hearts Northern Oaks on Jan. 10. Wagner, who scored 35 points in the contest and is signed with Trinity University, is averaging 18 points and nine rebounds for Cornerstone (21-2).

1,000: Career points for Judson junior guard Delaney Arredondo, who attained the milestone during the Rockets’ 43-40 win vs. Steele on Jan. 3.

300: Career wins for Taft girls soccer coach Scott Davis, who accomplished the feat during the Raiders’ 3-0 decision vs. Holmes on Wednesday. Davis is in his 22nd year at Taft and has guided his team to the Region IV-6A tournament in each of the past two seasons. The Raiders advanced to the regional final in 2024, losing to eventual state finalist Austin Westlake 2-0 after playing the majority of the game shorthanded. They lost to Round Rock 2-1 in the regional semifinals in 2023.

64: Consecutive district matches played without a loss by the Harlan boys soccer team before falling to Brennan 3-1 on Tuesday. It was the Hawks’ first league setback since a 3-0 decision vs. Southwest on March 10, 2020. Harlan, which has advanced to the Region IV-6A tournament in three of the past four seasons (2021, 2022, 2024), amassed a 60-0-4 record in district competition during the span.

20: Judson’s listing in this week’s Blue Star Media Elite 25 national girls basketball rankings. The Rockets (28-1) have won 21 straight games heading into Friday’s District 29-6A contest at Clemens.

Notebook
First pitch:
The UIL baseball season officially gets underway on Friday, Jan. 17, when teams across Texas are permitted to conduct their first after-school practices. The first day that the University Interscholastic League allows for schools to play a season opener is Feb. 17, with the state finals being contested on June 5-7 at Dell Diamond in Round Rock. Johnson was the lone San Antonio-area team to advance to the state tournament a year ago, falling 2-0 in the state semifinals to eventual Class 6A state champion Tomball. Boerne in 4A and D’Hanis in 1A advanced to the regional final in 2024.
