In memoriam: Dr. Corye (Perez) Beene, a standout on LEE’s 1987 regional finalist volleyball team, died May 7 after a battle with cancer. She was 53.
Beene, an All-City outside hitter while playing for legendary coach Lupe Ruiz, helped the Volunteers come within one win of advancing to the UIL state tournament during her senior season before falling to Madison. She also played for Alamo Volleyball Association under the guidance of Gool Castleberry, the club’s founder, and Mark Papich.
The 5-foot-11 Beene earned a scholarship to Angelo State, where her teammates included O’Connor coach Yami Garcia, Roxanne Barrera (Harlandale), Andrea Barrera (Devine), Cel Bennett (Holmes), Patricia Horny (Clark), Leona Soechting (New Braunfels Canyon) and Karen Fox (teacher at Reagan). Beene helped the Belles win the Lone Star Conference tournament title in 1991 and advance to the NCAA Division II playoffs, where they knocked off No. 17 Air Force in the first round before falling to No. 1 West Texas A&M. She also was a graduate assistant coach for Angelo State’s 1992 LSC tournament-winning squad.
Beene, who taught history at Texas Tech, South Plains College and the University of Texas-Arlington, is survived by her husband Chris Beene, a hall-of-fame college track coach, and their two children.
National honor: Cornerstone junior Megan Fitch was tabbed as one of the nation’s top players in the Class of 2025 by Volleyball magazine.
