Career wins for Brennan baseball coach Jason Thompson. He reached the milestone during the Bears’ 5-3 victory vs. Laredo United in Game 2 of a Class 6A bidistrict series on May 4. Thompson is in his third season at Brennan and 10th overall. He previously coached at Alamo Heights, leading the Mules to a Class 5A state runner-up finish in 2016 behind pitcher Forrest Whitley, the No. 17 overall pick by the Houston Astros in that year’s Major League Baseball draft.

150: Career wins for Antonian softball coach Johnny Villanueva, who reached the mark during the Apaches’ 17-0 triumph vs. Incarnate Word on April 23. Villanueva is in his eighth season at Antonian and has led the Apaches to TAPPS Division I state title in 2022 and runner-up finishes in 2023, 2021 and 2017. Antonian defeated Plano Prestonwood 18-3 in a regional final on Wednesday to advance to the state tournament for the fourth straight season. The Apaches will face Addison Trinity Christian at 4:30 p.m. Monday at the University of Texas-Arlington.

30 Area athletes selected to participate in the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches Organization’s Senior All-Star matches. The event is Saturday at Blossom Athletic Center, with Region I facing off vs. Region II at noon (boys on West Field, girls on East Field) and Region III taking on Region IV at 2 p.m. (boys on West Field, girls on East Field).
Brandeis’ Noah Lopez, Harlan’s Sam Allen, Alamo Heights’ Ethan Davila Rodriguez and Cash Alvarado, Boerne’s Hudson Vickery and Brett Hettie, O’Connor’s Ethan Diaz, Smithson Valley’s Chase Hansen, Southwest’s John Soliz and Ramiro Flores, MacArthur’s Jared Garibay, Johnson’s Diego Robles and Trae Balogun, Jay’s Delahmu Reeves and Pieper’s Joaquin Sanchez are on the Region IV team. MacArthur’s Damion Simmons is on the coaching staff.
Taft’s Layla Rangel, Bella Galan and Jordan Matthews, Canyon Lake’s Gabbriella Pace, Reagan’s Lauren Mueller, O’Connor’s Aleese Maldonado, Boerne Champion’s Ava Slay, Johnson’s Mabry Williams and Ashlyn Digioia, LEE’s Kendall Jones, Davenport’s Jocelyn Arreguin, Alamo Heights’ Jessica Mann and Maggie Hartnett, Roosevelt’s Ashley Head and Jefferson’s Chandler Arredondo are on the Region IV squad. Taft’s Scott Davis and Boerne’s Jeremy Shannon are on the coaching staff.

7: Area soccer athletes named All-State by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. Boerne Champion’s Ava Slay made the Class 5A team, while Boerne’s Anna Darling, Sophia Harper, Isabella Pettet and Kinsley Sawyer and Pleasanton’s Madeline Brymer and Makenzie Richter earned spots in 4A.

New leader:
Clifton Tierney has been named to new boys soccer coach at Brandeis. He replaced Brian Maher, who retired after the season.
Tierney comes to Brandeis from Boerne Champion, where he led the Chargers to a 93-34-29 record, two district titles and six playoff appearances in seven seasons. He previously coached for 10 seasons at Bandera, guiding the Bulldogs to six playoff berths, including the Region IV-4A final in 2017.
Maher was the only coach at Brandeis during its 16 seasons, leading it to 12 postseason appearances and two regional tournaments (2014 and 2015). He coached 22 seasons overall, including six at Marshall, and compiled a 249-147-95 overall record and 17 playoff berths.
