From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
100: Career wins for La Vernia boys soccer coach Manuel Amador, who reached the milestone with the Bears’ historic 3-0 victory vs. Austin Achieve in a Class 4A third-round match on Tuesday. The triumph sent La Vernia to the Region IV-4A tournament for the first time in history. Amador is in his fifth season at La Vernia, where he has coached the boys and girls teams (he coached both during the 2023 season). He previously coached at Highlands.
50: Goals scored this season by Taft senior forward Jordan Matthews. She reached the mark when she volleyed a Brennan defender’s clearance out of midair and into the upper left corner as time expired in the first half of the Raiders’ 5-0 win on Tuesday in a Class 6A third-round game at Farris Stadium.
Matthews, who is signed with Texas-Rio Grande Valley, is the first Taft player and the 22nd athlete in San Antonio-area girls history with 50 goals in a season. She joined Canyon Lake’s Savanna Oberholtzer (55 goals), Schertz John Paul II’s Maeve Sullivan (54 goals) and Kennedy’s Adamary Mireles (50 goals) as area players this season accomplishing the feat.
9: Area girls athlete named to the Texas High School Coaches Association’s Super Elite basketball team. Clark’s Arianna Roberson was named MVP while Brandeis’ Rian Forestier and Steele’s Mia Hammonds earned spots on the Class 6A squad. Wagner’s LA Sneed was the area’s lone selection on the 5A team, while Boerne’s Averi Aaron was MVP and Fredericksburg’s Taylor Grona made the 4A team. Cole’s Kamyra Childs and Lytle’s Calyssa Sevier are on the 3A squad and Falls City’s Cayla Albers was selected to the 2A team.
