From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
150: Career wins for Johnson boys soccer coach David Johnson, who reached the milestone during the Jaguars’ 6-2 triumph vs. Cedar Park Vista Ridge in a Class 6A second-round match on Thursday. Johnson is in his fifth season at the helm of the Jaguars and previously coached at Jay and McCollum.
100: Career goals for Davenport junior forward Rylee Reisdorph, who accomplished the feat during the Wolves’ 8-0 victory vs. Jarrell on Tuesday. Reisdorph, who is committed to Central Arkansas, scored twice in the game to become the first Davenport player and 53rd player in San Antonio-area girls history to reach the mark.
34: Goals scored so far this season by MacArthur senior midfielder Jared Garibay, which is believed to be a school record. He scored twice in the Brahmas’ 3-2 win vs. Liberty Hill in a Class 5A second-round match on Friday to surpass the previous mark of 32 goals established by James Dean in 1990.
Dean, who played at Clemson before transferring and earning NAIA All-America honors at Incarnate Word, helped MacArthur open the 1990 season with 21 straight wins, earn a No. 1 state ranking and reach the regional final. The Brahmas lost to Brownsville Hanna 1-0 in a controversial game in which they had three goals disallowed.
Notebook
End of an era: Brian Maher, the only head coach the Brandeis boys soccer program has known, is retiring at the end of the school year for family reasons.
Maher coached the Broncos for 16 seasons, leading them to 12 playoff appearances and Region IV-6A tournament berths in 2014 and 2015. The 2015 squad, led by forward Pato Botello Faz, who now plays for United Soccer League Championship’s Las Vegas Lights FC, lost to Brownsville Rivera 1-0 in the regional final.
Overall, Maher coached 22 seasons, including six at Marshall, and led his teams to 17 playoff berths. He had a 249-147-95 overall record.
New leader: Boerne High School has named Staci Lawrence as its head volleyball coach. She replaced Tisha Pettibon, who is now at Bandera.
Lawrence takes over the Greyhounds, who are moving to Class 5A from 4A next fall, after guiding Ipswich High to Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division IV state championships in 2021, 2022 and 2023. She was named an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) 30 under 30 recipient, which recognizes top rising coaches.
A former setter, Lawrence guided Endicott College to Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) titles in 2015 and 2016.
Cougars’ boss: New Braunfels Canyon has hired Sean McAuliffe as its new football coach. He will become the third head coach in as many seasons, following Travis Bush (2022) and Nate Leonard (2023). Bush left to start the program at Texas-Rio Grande Valley and Leonard moved to McKinney High, his alma mater.
McAuliffe arrived at Canyon from Cy Ranch in the Houston area. He had a 34-20 record and made the Class 6A playoffs in all five seasons at the helm. Before that, McAuliffe had a 54-13 record and made the postseason in each of his five seasons at Judson, his alma mater, including advancing to the 6A Division I state semifinals in 2014 and 2015 and the Region IV-6A final in 2018.
He was a defensive lineman on the Rockets’ 1992 state championship team that was coached by D.W. Rutledge and featured record-setting running back Jerod Douglas.
New Braunfels Canyon will move to 6A from 5A next fall and compete in District 29-6A along with Judson, Steele, Clemens, East Central, San Marcos and Buda Johnson.
