From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
300: Career wins for Fredericksburg boys soccer coach Shannon Petsch, who reached the milestone during the Battlin’ Billies’ 6-1 triumph vs. Wimberley on March 1. He’s the seventh area boys coach with 300 wins, joining former Alamo Heights coach Bruce Fink, Hector Sandoval (Southwest, LEE, Madison, Central Catholic), LEE’s David Rogers, Central Catholic’s Walter Rule, Larry Schaffer (McCollum, Smithson Valley, Roosevelt, Churchill, New Braunfels), New Braunfels Canyon’s Rob Rush and former Smithson Valley coach Eric Nichols.
Petsch is in his 26th season at Fredericksburg — his 2011 team advanced to the regional final before falling to eventual state champion Boerne Champion — and 29th overall. He previously coached at Jefferson.
100: Total victories for Brandeis baseball coach Eric Jupe, who reached the mark during the Broncos’ 7-1 decision vs. Johnson on March 8. Jupe is in his seventh season as head coach at Brandeis and has led the Broncos to the UIL Class 6A playoffs in four of the previously five completed seasons.
28: Years since the MacArthur boys soccer team last won a district championship before accomplishing the feat this season.
With Tuesday’s 6-1 win vs. Highlands, Coach Damion Simmons’ squad secured the Brahmas’ first league crown since 1996, when they made the second of back-to-back appearances at the UIL state tournament.
The 1996 team was guided by Coach Robert Crivellari and featured current Smithson Valley girls soccer coach Jason Adkins, Ryan McDougal, Robert Reid, Brian Pearce, Tony Durante and Kurt Gosdin.
