From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
1,000: Career points for Reagan junior Christeen Iwuala, who reached the milestone during the Rattlers’ 60-28 win over MacArthur during District 28-6A play on Dec. 12. Iwuala becomes the eighth Reagan girls player to accomplish the feat, joining Wendy Knight, Mailee Jones, Jessica Kuster, Dyana Offutt, Moriah Mack, Dru Tomaszewski and Alexis Williams.
Kuster, who was an All-American at Rice and graduated as the school’s career leader in points (2,081), rebounds (1,376) and double-doubles (67), played professionally in Italy, Hungary, Romania, Australia and Czech Republic. Mack was the Western Athletic Conference player of the year and tournament MVP in 2017. Mack was among the final cuts by the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx in 2017, the year they won the league title. Kuster was among the final cuts out of training camps by the San Antonio Stars in 2014 and the Tulsa Shock in 2015.
Knight had a standout career and Rice and graduated among the program’s leaders in 3-pointers. Jones played at Youngstown State and Chicago State and is a member of the Vietnamese national team, while Tomaszewski previously was head coach at LEE.
700: Career victories for S.A. Veterans Memorial girls basketball coach Christina Camacho. She attained the mark during the Patriots’ 38-37 win vs. Dripping Springs on Dec. 18.
Camacho is only the fifth area girls coach to reach the 700-win plateau, joining Jourdanton’s Wanda Bender (901 wins), Poth’s Peggy Hosek (831), Devine’s Gayle Sessions (822) and Jay’s Mike Floyd (731).
In her 34th season, Camacho guided Veterans Memorial to the Class 5A state final last year and the 4A finale in 2018. She also had coaching stints at Burbank, Holmes and Wagner, leading the latter to the UIL state tournament in 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2015.
4: Days until the UIL soccer season begins. Teams around the state can begin playing matches on Dec. 29, but the majority of area teams aren’t scheduled to take the field until January.
The UIL state tournament is scheduled for April 14-17. The 2020 season was canceled with only a week remaining in the regular season because of the coronavirus pandemic.
LEE in Class 6A and Southwest in 5A were unbeaten and strong bets to make deep runs in the boys playoffs. Madison (6A), Alamo Heights and Boerne Champion (5A) and Boerne (4A) were area squads that were considered state contenders on the girls side.
