From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
150: Career wins for MacArthur girls soccer coach Hector Cano, who reached the milestone with Brahmas’ 8-1 decision vs. Burbank on March 8. Cano is in his first season at MacArthur and previously was head coach at Saint Mary’s Hall and El Paso Ysleta.
100: Career goals for Kennedy junior midfielder Adamary Mireles, who accomplished the feat in the Rockets’ 2-0 win vs. YWLA on Wednesday. Mireles, who has 49 goals this season, is believed to be the first Kennedy girls player to reach the mark.
100: Career goals for La Vernia senior midfielder Quinn Gulley, who hit the standard during the Bears’ 3-0 victory vs. Kennedy on Monday. Gulley is the first La Vernia girls player to reach the milestone.
100: Wins for Schertz John Paul II softball coach Holly Blackman, who recorded the feat during the Guardians’ 18-7 triumph vs. Austin Valor on March 8. Blackman is in her 10th season at Schertz John Paul II and guided the program to three TAPPS Division III state crowns (2015, 2016, 2018) and a state runner-up finish (2017) with a roster that included twins Kayla and Gabbie Kowalik, both Division I prospects.
100: Career goals for Schertz John Paul II senior midfielder Maeve Sullivan, who hit the plateau during the Guardians’ TAPPS Division III second-round playoff win vs. Houston British International on Feb. 26. Sullivan, who is signed with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), joined Emilie Rompel and Madeline Seebeck as the only Schertz John Paul II players to reach the mark.
100: Total wins for Schertz John Paul II girls soccer coach Caolan O’Gorman. He reached the milestone during a 3-0 victory vs. Holy Cross on Feb. 8. O’Gorman just completed his fifth season with the Guardians and has led them to TAPPS Division III state titles in 2020 and 2022, state runner-up finishes in 2021 and 2023, the state semifinals this year, and five district championships.
