From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
350: Career wins for Smithson Valley girls soccer coach Jason Adkins, who reached the milestone with an 8-0 triumph vs. Seguin on Feb. 20.
Adkins, a standout player on MacArthur’s 1995 and 1996 state semifinalist teams, joined Frankie Whitlock (Reagan, Churchill and Judson), Saint Mary’s Hall’s Brian Kaestner, Audrey Ambrose (Madison and Jefferson), Alamo Heights’ Chris Sharp and Liz Sandoval (Clark, Warren, Highlands, Burbank and East Central) as the only area girls coaches to accomplish the feat.
In his 22nd season at Smithson Valley, Adkins has led the Rangers to 11 district titles. A year ago, Smithson Valley advanced to UIL Class 5A state tournament for the first time, losing 2-1 in overtime in the state semifinals to eventual champion Grapevine. The Rangers opened the 2023 season with 27 consecutive wins, a San Antonio-area record.
200: Wins for MacArthur softball coach Mike Alfaro during his tenure at the school. He reached the mark with a 14-0 decision vs. Los Fresnos at the Southwest tournament on Feb. 23. Alfaro is in his 11th season at MacArthur and previously was head coach at Southside and Cornerstone.
100: Career goals for Johnson senior forward and Oklahoma State signee Mabry Williams, who reached the plateau during the Jaguars’ win vs. Roosevelt on Feb. 23. Williams is the first Johnson player and the 51st girls player in San Antonio-area history to reach the mark.
36: Consecutive district matches played by the Southwest girls soccer team without a loss before Tuesday’s 2-1 setback vs. Medina Valley. The Dragons went 34-0-2 vs. league competition following a 2-1 defeat vs. Medina Valley on March 20, 2021.
Joyceline Tello and Mykelti Griggs each scored a goal and Isabel Ruiz had an assist for Medina Valley in Tuesday’s victory.
26: Goals scored this season by Medina Valley senior Jorge Patino, a school record. He reached the standard with three goals vs. South San on Feb. 23. Patino is also the Panthers’ career leader in goals with 62.
