H.S. mailbag: News and notes from around San Antonio area sports landscape

From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:

Career points for New Braunfels senior guard Lance Beeghley, who accomplished the feat during the Unicorns’ 63-43 vs. Judson on Feb. 13. Beeghley, who is committed to SMU for football, has paced New Braunfels this season to a school-record 31 wins, its first district title since 1993 and its first outright district championship since 1985.
The Unicorns topped LEE 54-32 in a Class 6A bidistrict game and will play Austin Lake Travis in the second round at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Kyle Lehman.

400: Career wins for Smithson Valley softball coach Amanda Wolf-Schramm, who reached the milestone as the Rangers finished 6-0 at the Comal ISD Wurst tournament Feb. 15-17.
Wolf-Schramm is in her fifth season at Smithson Valley and 18th overall. She previously coached at Elgin and Bastrop.

Balthun

250: Total wins for Clemens softball coach Amanda Balthun, who met the standard during the Buffaloes’ 10-7 decision vs. Taft on Feb. 16. Balthun is in her 11th season as head coach at Clemens and 17th season overall. She previously coached at McCollum.
Balthun, a Madison graduate, is in her final season at Clemens. She was recently hired as head softball coach and girls athletic coordinator at New Braunfels ISD’s Long Creek High School, which is scheduled to open in the fall.

100: Wins for Judson junior wrestler Samaria Barnett, who reached the mark at the UIL Class 6A state meet on Feb. 16. Barnett captured the state title in the 152-pound division a day later, becoming the first Judson girl wrestler to accomplish the feat.

12: Records established by San Antonio Great Hearts Monte Vista at the UIL Class 4A state swimming championships at Josh Davis Natatorium on Feb. 16. The girls won their second straight team state title, while the boys secured their first.
The Lions set marks in the boys’ 200-yard medley relay, girls’ 200 medley relay and 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
Jaylee Hager (200 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke), Sawyer Stolarczyk (200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) and Averie Hager (100 butterfly, 500 freestyle) also recorded top marks.

2: Number of 40-yard goals tallied by Saint Mary’s Hall junior midfielder/defender Greer Kemmett during the Barons’ 2-1 victory vs. San Antonio Christian in a TAPPS Division II District 4 contest on Tuesday. Kemmett’s second goal with 6 seconds left was the game-winner.
