From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
2,000: Career points for New Braunfels Christian senior Parker Joseph, who reached the mark during the Wildcats’ 87-39 win Tuesday vs. San Marcos Academy. He is the second New Braunfels Christian player to record a milestone in recent weeks. Teammate Crew Wright, a junior, notched his 1,000th point during a 56-38 win vs. Castle Hills on Jan. 30.
1,000: Career rebounds for Clark senior Arianna Roberson, a Duke signee and McDonald’s All-American, who accomplished the feat during the Cougars’ 56-45 win vs. Churchill on Feb. 2. Clark, the defending Class 6A state champion, plays Round Rock Cedar Ridge in a second-round playoff contest at 8 p.m. Friday at Seguin High School.
300: Career wins for Jefferson boys basketball coach Art Vela, who reached the milestone during the Mustangs’ 66-51 triumph vs. Brackenridge on Feb. 2. It is the second milestone for the program in the past month. Junior guard Trey Perez scored his 1,000th point during a 67-53 win vs. Edison on Jan. 9.
100: Career goals for Taft senior forward Jordan Matthews, who reached the plateau during the Raiders’ 7-1 win vs. Jay on Feb. 9. Matthews is believed to be only the 50th girls player in San Antonio-area history to accomplish the feat. She joins Adriana Hutson as the only Taft players to register 100 goals.
100: Career wins for MacArthur boys soccer coach Damion Simmons, who reached the mark during the Brahmas’ 3-1 victory vs. Alamo Heights on Feb. 9. Simmons is in his 11th season with the Brahmas. He led them to the UIL playoffs in 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2023 in previous 10 seasons.
100: Wins for Harlan boys soccer coach Bert Atilano during his six seasons at the school. He reached the mark during the Hawks’ 3-1 victory vs. Stevens on Jan. 27. In the previous five seasons, Atilano has guided Harlan to two Region IV-6A tournament appearances, three district titles and five playoff berths.
51: Consecutive district matches played by the Smithson Valley girls soccer team without a loss before falling 2-1 to Boerne Champion on Feb. 9. The Rangers went 48-0-3 following a 4-1 setback to New Braunfels Canyon on Feb. 25, 2020.
23: Years since the Alamo Heights girls basketball team last won a playoff game before Tuesday’s 54-52 victory vs. Harlandale in a Class 5A bidistrict contest.
In 2021, the Mules defeated Rockport-Fulton 45-44 in the first round before falling in the second round to Corpus Christi Calallen, which advanced to the UIL state tournament.
Alamo Heights, which this season has established a school record for wins in a season (25), plays Leander Glenn in the second round at 6 p.m. Friday at Kyle Lehman High School.
4: Days until the start of the UIL baseball season. Feb. 19 is the first day schools across the state can play their first game.
The University Interscholastic League state tournament is June 5-8 at the University of Texas’ Disch-Falk Field in Austin and Round Rock’s Dell Diamond.
Boerne Champion (Class 5A) was the only San Antonio area team to advance to the state tournament a year ago.
Notebook
Hanging it up: O’Connor High School volleyball coach Yami Garcia, one of the San Antonio area’s winningest coaches in her sport, is retiring.
Garcia is the only head coach in school history, starting the program from scratch in 1998. She amassed an 842-270 record in 26 seasons, including leading the Panthers to the UIL Class 6A state tournament in 2017 and 2018, the Region IV-6A final in 2001, 2009 and 2015, and the regional semifinals in 2020, 2021 and this past fall.
A Harlandale graduate, Garcia is the area’s third-winningest coach, trailing only Cornerstone’s Mike Carter and Poth’s Patti Zenner. She previously was an assistant coach at Clark and Burbank.
National honor: Alamo Heights freshman forward/midfielder Mikayla Cunningham has been called into the United States Under-16 youth national team training camp.
The camp, which is composed of 24 players from across the nation, is scheduled for Feb. 22-29 in California.
