From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
3,000: Career points for Lytle senior point guard Calyssa Sevier, who reached the milestone during the Pirates’ game vs. Dilley on Tuesday. Sevier, a Midwestern State signee, is only the fourth San Antonio-area girls player to score 3,000 points, joining Jourdanton’s Carol Dornak (4,010), Steele’s Meighan Simmons (3,406) — who played in the WNBA and was an All-American and SEC player of the year while playing for the legendary Pat Summitt at Tennessee — and Boerne’s Tori Talbert (3,231). Dornak, who went on to play for the famed Wayland Baptist Flying Queens, played at Jourdanton from 1964-67, back when UIL girls basketball was still 6-on-6. From 1950 to 1978, the girls game was comprised of teams having three players on each end of the court, with designated players only allowed to shoot the ball.
1,000: Career points for East Central senior guard Emery Espinoza, who reached the total during the Hornets’ game vs. Judson on Tuesday.
1,000: Career rebounds for Brennan senior forward and UTSA signee Taylor Ross, who garnered the feat during the Bears’ 74-41 triumph vs. O’Connor on Jan. 26.
1,000: Career points for Reagan Joana Lopez, who reached the milestone during the Rattlers’ District 28-6A contest vs. LEE on Jan. 26.
200: Totals victories for Lytle girls basketball coach Lori Wilson, who reached the plateau with the Pirates’ 94-17 win vs. Dilley on Tuesday. Wilson is in her 13th season at Lytle.
100: Wins for Boerne Geneva girls basketball coach Aamir McCleary, who reached the mark during the Eagles’ victory vs. Hill Country Christian on Jan. 26. McCleary, a former standout player at Reagan, is in his fourth season at the school.
62: Points scored by Brandeis senior Rian Forestier during the Broncos’ 93-90 double-overtime loss to Churchill on Tuesday. The total trails only the 75 points that Jay’s Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil scored vs. Highlands in 1984 and the 68 points that New Braunfels’ Nell Fortner recorded vs. San Marcos in 1977.
Davis’ 75 points are believed to be tied with Goodrich’s Adrian McGowen for the most in state history for 5-on-5 basketball. Fortner’s scoring output came during the 6-on-6 era.
23: Wins this season for the Alamo Heights girls basketball team, tying a school record. The Mules accomplished the feat with Tuesday’s 77-43 decision vs. Lanier, earning their first Class 5A playoff berth since the 2011-12 season in the process. Berkley Hart led the way with 27 points and Talaiyah Andrews added 13.
9: Consecutive shutouts to start the season by the Boerne girls soccer team before conceding its first goal. The Greyhounds, two-time defending Region IV-4A champions, had a streak of 798 minutes without allowing a goal before Laredo LBJ scored on a free kick with two minutes left during a game on Jan. 26.
