By the numbers
2,000: Career points for Boerne senior forward Averi Aaron, who reached the milestone at the Boerne tournament on Dec. 27-28. The 6-foot-1 Aaron, who is in her fourth season on varsity and helped the Greyhounds advance to the UIL Class 4A state tournament a year ago and in 2021, is signed with Louisiana Tech.
1,000: Career points for Boerne senior guard/forward Abby Smith, who accomplished the feat during the Boerne tournament on Dec. 27-28. The 5-11 Smith, also a four-year varsity player, is committed to Flagler College in Florida.
7: Days until the UIL allows high school baseball teams across the state to conduct their first after-school workouts on Jan. 19. The first day of the season is Feb. 19, with the state tournament scheduled to be contested June 5-8 at the University of Texas’ Disch-Falk Field in Austin and Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
Boerne Champion (Class 5A) was a state semifinalist a year ago.
Notebook
Coaching honor: Harlan’s Monica Gonzales and Davenport’s Taylour Toso were named the Texas High School Coaches Association’s Region 8 volleyball coach of the year for their respective classification.
Toso was tabbed for Class 4A after guiding the Wolves (47-5) to a state championship in just her second season at the school, outlasting defending state champion Canyon Randall in five sets in the final.
Gonzales was lauded after leading the Hawks (44-6) to their first UIL Class 6A state tournament appearance.
