From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:

By the numbers
2,000:
Career digs for Burbank senior libero Kaylee Duque, who reached the mark during the Bulldogs’ District 27-5A match vs. MacArthur on Oct. 17.

1,000: Total kills for Hondo senior middle hitter Madison Rodriguez, who accomplished the feat during the Owls’ match vs. Crystal City on Oct. 20.

600: Career blocks for Brandeis senior middle blocker Austin Smoak, who attained the standard during the Broncos’ District 28-6A-clinching win vs. Reagan on Tuesday.

200: Career goals tallied by Brandeis senior water polo player Grace Goldhammer. She reached the total with seven goals during the Broncos’ 17-10 win vs. Brennan in the Region IV-6A final on Oct. 21. Goldhammer has 126 goals this season after notching 80 in 2022. She has helped Brandeis (27-4) advance to the UIL state tournament for the second year in a row. The Broncos play Richmond Foster (27-1) in the state semifinals at noon Saturday at North East ISD’s Josh Davis Natatorium.

91: Consecutive district volleyball matches won by Poth, a mark garnered during Tuesday’s 25-19, 25-19, 25-14 triumph vs. Karnes City. The streak, which started in 2015, is the second-longest in program history and tied for No. 3 in area history.
The Pirettes won 97 straight league contests between 2003-2012, which is No. 2 behind Devine’s area-record 112 straight district wins. Jefferson won 91 district matches in a row between 1978-84.
In 30 seasons at Poth, Coach Patti Zenner has guided the Pirettes to a 300-10 overall district record.

40: Wins this season for the Davenport volleyball team. The Wolves reached the milestone with Tuesday’s victory over Bandera, becoming the 17th area school to have a 40-win season. Reagan, Clemens, Alamo Heights, Churchill, Holy Cross, Incarnate Word, Johnson, La Vernia, Navarro, New Braunfels, O’Connor, Poth, Brandeis, Cornerstone, Antonian and New Braunfels Canyon are the other schools to accomplish the feat.

14: Years since Southwest last won a district championship in volleyball before accomplishing the feat with a 25-27, 25-23, 26-28, 25-21, 16-14 victory vs. Harlandale on Oct. 20. In 2009, the Dragons made the second of back-to-back trips to the Region IV-5A (now 6A) tournament, where they fell in the regional semifinals to eventual state finalist Austin Westlake. Southwest finished 14-0 this season in District 28-5A to claim its first undefeated league crown.
