From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
1,000: Career digs for Antonian junior libero Anna Arceneaux, who reached the total during the Apaches’ win vs. The Village School from Houston on Sept. 22. On the road to reaching the milestone, Arceneaux notched a school-record 42 digs in a five-set victory vs. New Braunfels on Sept. 19. She surpassed the previous mark of 40 by Vivian McNair vs. Reagan on Oct. 3, 2014.
1,000: Total assists for Southwest senior setter Starlett Hoyuela, who accomplished the feat during the Dragons’ four-set win vs. Harlandale on Sept. 27. The victory snapped Harlandale’s 32-match district winning streak that dated back to the 2021 season.
1,000: Career kills for Clemens junior outside hitter/middle blocker Isabella Andrews, who reached the mark during the Buffaloes’ District 27-6A match vs. San Marcos on Sept. 22.
1,000: Totals digs for Davenport junior libero Logan Strong, who attained the mark during the Wolves’ win vs. Fredericksburg on Sept. 22.
1,000: Career digs for Devine senior outside hitter Rylee Esquibel, who reached the total during her team’s contest vs. FEAST on Sept. 19. It was the second major milestone for Esquibel, who recorded her 1,000th kill vs. Carrizo Springs on Sept. 12.
1,000: Total kills for Cornerstone junior outside hitter Megan Fitch, who reached the plateau while helping the Warriors win the Nike Tournament of Champions Sept. 1-2 in Tampa, Fla.
300: Career wins for Smithson Valley football coach Larry Hill, who reached the milestone during the Rangers’ 24-7 victory vs. Wagner on Sept. 15. Hill is in his 31st season at Smithson Valley, leading the Rangers to three state finals (2000, 2002, 2004), and 33rd overall. He previously was head coach for two seasons at Jourdanton. Hill is the area’s second-winningest coach behind Jim Streety, who had 343 wins during a 40-year career that included stints at Madison and New Braunfels. They are the only area coaches to reach 300 wins and two of 15 in Texas history.
56: Digs for O’Connor senior libero Carly Chavez, a school record. Chavez eclipsed the previous mark of 41 by Bryshanna Brown vs. Stevens on Oct. 6, 2020.
8: Touchdown passes for East Central quarterback Isaiah Mackey during the Hornets’ 58-16 triumph vs. Canyon Lake on Sept. 22. The TD total ties the San Antonio-area record previously accomplished by Southside’s Richard Torres (vs. Brownsville Lopez in 2021), Boerne Champion’s Josh Green) vs. Georgetown in 2015) and John Free (vs. Port Lavaca in 2010).
5: Days until the start of the UIL water polo playoffs. Monday is the first day that bidistrict matches can be contested. The state tournament is Oct. 28 at North East ISD’s Josh Davis Natatorium. Boerne Champion boys were state finalists and Brandeis girls were state semifinalists in 2022, the sport’s inaugural season sponsored by the University Interscholastic League.
