From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:
By the numbers
2,249: Career digs for Reagan senior libero Maddie Correa. The total is a school record, surpassing the previous mark of 2,215 by Lydia Niebla. Correa, a Texas Tech signee, passed Niebla during the Rattlers’ win vs. Brandeis in the Region IV-6A final on Dec. 4.
Correa, who had 32 digs in Monday’s five-set loss to Katy Seven Lakes in the UIL Class 6A state semifinals, also holds Reagan’s single-season digs mark with 856, which she recorded as a junior in 2019.
600: Career wins for Fredericksburg boys basketball coach Tim Kaman. He reached the milestone during the Battlin’ Billies’ 57-42 triumph vs. Marble Falls on Dec. 5. Kaman is in his 27th season at Fredericksburg and previously had a stint at Palmer.
200: Career victories for Medina Valley girls basketball coach Justin Russell, who accomplished the feat during the Panthers’ 59-21 decision vs. Pearsall on Dec. 4.
150: Wins for Antonian boys basketball coach Rudy Bernal during his tenure at the school. He reached the plateau during the Apaches’ 64-54 victory vs. O’Connor on Dec. 4.
Bernal has been at Antonian for five-plus seasons and led the Apaches to the TAPPS 6A state title during the 2018-19 season, a state finalist finish last year and the regional final in 2017-18.
