H.S. mailbag: News and notes from around San Antonio area sports landscape

From the hardwood to the gridiron and beyond, taking a look back and ahead at the San Antonio-area high school sports landscape:

By the numbers
2:
Triple-doubles recorded last week by New Braunfels Canyon senior setter/outside hitter Erin Jones. Jones, who earlier this season notched 3,000 career assists, had 16 assists, 12 digs and 10 kills in a sweep of defending Region IV-5A champion Alamo Heights and 26 assists, 18 digs and 10 kills in a five-set win against 2019 Region IV-5A finalist Dripping Springs. She is committed to Division II power Angelo State.

6: Touchdowns scored by Floresville junior running back Dareion Murphy during last week’s 45-21 non-district victory vs. Southwest. Murphy finished the night with 286 rushing yards on 20 carries.

8: Times that Judson has been held scoreless in a football game since 1977, the year it began a state-record streak of consecutive winning seasons. DeSoto blanked the Rockets 37-0 last week, marking the first time that Judson has been shut out in a season opener since 1987 (0-0 tie vs. Marshall) and the first time overall since 2005 (14-0 loss to Churchill).
The Rockets were also held scoreless in 1979 (Jay, 28-0), 1980 (Roosevelt, 21-0), 1981 (Churchill, 14-0) and 1984 (Marshall, 0-0; and Roosevelt, 6-0). They have played 565 games during the span.
To put in context how rare the shutout was, Judson has won almost as many UIL state championships (six) as it has been held scoreless in a game (eight) during the past 44 seasons.

26: Consecutive district volleyball wins by Alamo Heights before losing to New Braunfels Canyon on Oct. 2. The setback was the first in league play for the Mules since falling to Edison on Sept. 21, 2018.

30: Consecutive district volleyball matches won by Clemens before losing to Smithson Valley on Oct. 2. The defending Region IV-6A champion, Clemens had won back-to-back undefeated league titles since a five-set loss to New Braunfels on Oct. 20, 2017.

Nayeli Gonzalez

38: Kills by Cornerstone sophomore outside hitter/middle blocker Nayeli Gonzalez during the Warriors’ five-set win Tuesday vs. La Vernia. The total is believed to be tied for the fourth-most in a match by an area player since at least 2008, trailing only Blanco’s Reagan Rogers’ 45 kills vs. Taft in the Region IV-2A semifinals on Nov. 14, 2014; Holy Cross’ Henrianna Ibarra’s 40 kills vs. Saint Mary’s Hall on Oct. 21, 2016; and Steele’s McKenzie Adams’ 39 kills vs. Antonian on Aug. 25, 2009. Ibarra also had 38 kills vs. Brandeis in 2016.

81: Points scored by Navarro in last week’s football victory vs. Manor New Tech. It is believed to be the third-most points scored in a game by an area team, trailing only the 83 that Roosevelt racked up vs. LEE in 2015 and the 82 that St. Gerard tallied vs. Judson in 1969.
