Marquee game
Navarro vs. Wimberley, 7:30 p.m. Friday at Boerne ISD Stadium: District 14-4A II foes will play twice in the same season for the second year in a row and the third time in 11 seasons. A year ago, Wimberley won 42-12 in the playoff en route to playing in the state final after Navarro prevailed 42-14 in the regular. Wimberley won both meetings in 2010.
The Panthers (11-2) won a nail-biter on Oct. 23, using their Slot-T attack to produce 326 rushing yards and claim a 24-22 win and the league title. Navarro leads the series over the past decade 7-6, including victories in seven of the past nine meetings.
Notable games
Falls City vs. Christoval, 7 p.m. Friday at Fredericksburg: The Beavers are in a regional final for the fourth straight season. Christoval, which football alums include the late Jack Pardee, one of Bear Bryant’s famed “Junction Boys” and a former college and NFL coach, and Colby Donaldson (runner-up on Survivor: Australian Outback), is making its deepest postseason venture since 1992 — when it was competing in six-man. The contest is a homecoming of sorts for Falls City coach Mark Kirchhoff, who used to coach at Eden in the early 1990s before leaving for the first of two stints at Falls City. Eden is roughly 50 miles from Christoval.
Reagan vs. Brandeis, 7:30 p.m. Friday at Farris Stadium: Reagan ran past Johnson last week to nab its first District 28-6A title since 2016. The Rattlers (8-1, 7-0) now turn their attention toward an unblemished title. Brandeis (6-2, 5-2) can sew up a postseason berth with a win. A loss could mean a tiebreaker might decide the Broncos’ future.
Smithson Valley vs. Judson, 7:30 p.m. Friday at Rutledge Stadium: The Rockets (6-1, 6-0) have already secured no worse than a share of their third District 27-6A title in four years and can lock up their second outright crown during the same span. Other than that, the contest between two of the area’s elite programs will provide an opportunity for each to build momentum heading into the playoffs. Smithson Valley (6-2, 4-2) had its district-title aspirations dashed with last week’s 14-10 setback vs. Steele.
Brackenridge vs. Lanier, 7:30 p.m. Friday at Alamo Stadium: The Eagles (4-0) look to give coach Willie Hall a district crown in his final season before retiring when they take on Lanier (3-1) for the District 13-5A I championship. It will be the second meeting this season between the teams. Brackenridge registered a 21-14 win in non-district play on Nov. 20.
Seguin at Dripping Springs, 7:30 p.m. Friday: The Matadors (6-2, 5-1) can grab a share of the District 12-5A I championship with a win, while Dripping Springs (7-2, 6-0) looks to grab the title outright. If Seguin prevails and New Braunfels Canyon (8-1, 5-1) knocks off Buda Johnson, Seguin, Dripping Springs and Canyon would finish in a three-way tie for first place.
Under the radar game
Harlandale vs. McCollum, 7:30 p.m. Friday Alamodome: Neither a district championship or playoff berth are on the line in this one, but that probably won’t matter when these longtime rivals meet in the 57th “Frontier Bowl.” The teams are a combined 1-11 — Harlandale is 1-5, McCollum is 0-6 — and each forfeited three games because of COVID-19.
