Marquee game
Jourdanton vs. Comfort, 7 p.m. Saturday at Somerset: This matchup has the feel of a late-round playoff encounter — and not one that will instead open up the Class 3A Division I competition.
The Indians (9-1) have been dominant all season, with their lone setback coming against Class 4A power Corpus Christi Calallen. Jourdanton quarterback Cole Andrus has thrown for 2,897 yards and 37 touchdowns for Jourdanton, which has scored at least 40 points in six straight games and has twice tallied 50 during that span.
Comfort (7-3) started strong by winning its first six games, hit a midseason skid with three straight losses, before regaining its footing and claiming a 76-0 win vs. Luling in its regular season finale to lock up a playoff berth. Quarterback Oscar Falcon has passed for more than 1,300 yards and 20 TDs.
Notable games
Madison vs. Johnson, 7:30 p.m. Friday at Heroes Stadium: The Jaguars get another stiff test in a bid to capture their second District 28-6A championship in four seasons and first since 2017.
Johnson (6-0 overall, 5-0 in District 28-6A) started and finished strong a week ago to outlast Roosevelt. This week, the team faces two-time defending league champion Madison (4-2, 3-1), which needs a win to keep alive its district-title aspiration and bolster its playoff hopes.
The Mavericks topped Clark last week, rebounding from their first district loss since 2017.
Southside at Southwest Legacy, 2 p.m. Saturday: Both teams enter this contest on four-game winning streaks. Legacy (4-2 overall, 2-0 in District 14-5A I) has rebounded strongly after opening the season with back-to-back losses, winning twice by three points apiece and twice by scoring 40 points.
Southside (4-0, 1-0) is unblemished thanks to a stout defense. The Cardinals have yielded 34 points in four games, an average of 8.5 points per game.
Wagner vs. Clemens, 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lehnhoff Stadium: Both teams need a win in this District 27-6A matchup for varied reasons. Wagner (2-2 overall and in district) has dropped two in a row and seeks to get back on a winning track to help its postseason chances stay afloat. Clemens (2-4, 1-3) defeated South San last week to snap a three-game losing streak, and needs another triumph to stay alive in its league’s playoff hunt.
Tale of the tape
Jourdanton WR Jarel Lilly vs. Comfort DB Jose Herrera: While Herrera has been a force on offense, hauling in 43 receptions for nearly 1,400 yards and 13 TDs, his talent might be best served on this occasion on defense. He has six interceptions and likely will have a crucial role in trying to slow down Lilly, who has 64 catches for 1,199 yards and 15 scores.
