Notable games
New Braunfels at Smithson Valley, 7:30 p.m. Friday: It’s hard to say that a game is must-win, especially only two weeks into District 27-6A action, but this contest has that feel to it. Both teams opened their season with two wins but dropped their league opener a week ago, with Smithson Valley falling to Wagner 27-24 in overtime and New Braunfels losing to Judson 37-14. The team that comes out on top in this one enhances its postseason stock, while the loser puts itself in a big hole.
Madison vs. Churchill, 7:30 p.m. Friday at Heroes Stadium: Another week, another test for two-time defending District 28-6A champion Madison. The Mavericks topped Roosevelt a week ago in their league opener and now face longtime foe Churchill, which has opened its campaign with back-to-back wins.
Alamo Heights at New Braunfels Canyon, 7:30 p.m. Friday: Mules coach Ron Rittimann returns to his alma mater looking to grab a second straight win after Alamo Heights dropped its season opener. New Braunfels Canyon returns to the field after a bye week and is off to its first 2-0 start since 2018.
Hondo at Devine, 7:30 p.m. Friday: The inside track to the District 15-4A II title will likely be determined when these long-time rivals, both 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league competition, meet for the 101st time. The Warhorses have won five of the past six matchups.
