Notable games
New Braunfels at East Central, 7 p.m. Friday: Fresh off a thrilling, last-second win vs. Judson last week, the Hornets (5-2, 3-1) can lock up a playoff berth with a victory in this crucial District 27-6A matchup. New Braunfels (5-2, 2-2) can also bolster its postseason picture with a triumph.
Marion at Poteet, 7:30 p.m. Friday: The Aggies (7-1, 4-0) can bolster their path toward winning the District 14-3A-I crown with a win. Marion (6-1, 2-1), with a win, could potentially create a four-team logjam at the top of the district standings.
Navarro at Wimberley, 7:30 p.m. Friday: These District 14-4A-II foes have developed quite a rivalry in recent years, with the teams splitting 18 all-time meetings. Wimberley (5-2, 2-0) has prevailed when it mattered, defeating Navarro (5-1, 1-0) in the last two Region IV-4A II finals. The Panthers has topped Wimberley during the regular season in each of the past two seasons.
Judson at Smithson Valley, 7 p.m. Friday: This is a must-see game every year because it features two of the area’s premier programs and the stakes seemingly are high. Once again, there is plenty on the line. For Smithson Valley, a win will keep it on track to win the District 27-6A title. For Judson, it needs a win to keep alive any hopes it has of making the playoffs.
Buda Johnson at Seguin, 7:30 p.m. Friday: Coach Craig Dailey, who previously was head coach at Clear Springs near Houston and quarterback coach at state power Katy, returned to his alma mater last spring and has the Matadors roaring. Seguin (5-2, 4-0) and Buda Johnson (7-0, 4-0) square off in a contest that likely figure prominently in who wins the District 12-5A-I championship.
Marshall vs. Harlan, 7 p.m. Saturday at Farris Stadium: The winner of this District 29-6A encounter locks up a playoff berth, while the loser would still have the inside track to the league’s final postseason spot. Brennan and Taft have already playoff-bound, while Warren is still mathematically alive. Marshall (6-1, 4-1) is seeking its first playoff berth since 2012.
Tale of the tape
Boerne quarterback Rashawn Galloway vs. Somerset defense: Galloway has thrown for 1,914 yards and 22 touchdowns, completing nearly 66 percent of his attempts to pace the Greyhounds to 37.7 points per game. Somerset is allowing 17.1 points and earlier this season limited Nebraska-bound quarterback Richard Torres and Southside to six points and 239 yards while forcing four turnovers.
