Marquee game
Southwest Legacy at Southwest, 7 p.m. Friday: The District 14-5A-I championship likely is on the line when these Southwest ISD schools face off at Dragon Stadium.
The Titans (5-1 overall, 2-0 in district) have been on a roll during their first season under coach Robert Bruce, who was promoted from offensive coordinator last spring after John Tarvin retired. Legacy’s lone setback was a 44-41 decision against Floresville, with the latter winning on a 50-yard Hail Mary on the game’s final play.
Southwest has also been on a hot streak since opening the season with back-to-back losses to Central Catholic (31-7) and Floresville (36-13), winning five in a row. The Dragons have been dominate thus far in district play, allowing only seven points in three contests and none in their last two outings.
Notable games
Clemens vs. Steele, 7 p.m. Friday at Lehnhoff Stadium: The Battle of 3009, as often has been the case, has plenty on the line. For the Knights (6-0 overall, 3-0 in District 27-6A), they look to remain unbeaten and move a step closer to securing a playoff berth and staying in the hunt for a league crown. For Clemens (2-4, 2-1), it’s an opportunity to bounce back from a lopsided loss a week ago to Smithson Valley and perhaps stay above the fray of what could become a logjam for what could develop into a pursuit for 27-6A’s final two playoff spots.
East Central at Judson, 7 p.m. Friday: The Rockets (2-4, 1-2) snapped a four-game losing streak — their first since 1976 — with last week’s 37-0 triumph vs. South San. Judson now hosts East Central (4-2, 2-1), needing a win to bolster its playoff hopes. East Central has won two in a row, including last week’s 31-21 victory vs. Wagner, and a win on Friday will help the Hornets take a crucial step toward earning a postseason berth.
Kerrville Tivy at Boerne Champion, 7 p.m. Friday: For years, this matchup was often for the district championship. This season, the contest is both teams’ second District 15-5A-II contest, but the outcome could prove to be pivotal down the line. Tivy outlasted Lockhart 50-43 a week ago to earn its first win after starting the year 0-5. Champion (5-1) blanked Medina Valley 17-0 last week, rebounding from a loss two weeks ago to El Campo.
Harlan vs. Holmes, 7 p.m. Friday at Gustafson Stadium: With Brennan, Taft and Marshall appearing to be in the driver’s seat for District 29-6A’s first three playoff spots, this matchup likely will go a long way in deciding the final berth. Harlan (4-3, 3-2) is a half-game ahead of Holmes (4-2, 2-2).
Devine at Hondo, 7:30 p.m. Friday: These long-time rivals meet for the 102nd time as they square off in a District 15-4A-II encounter. Hondo (2-3, 1-0) rolled past Pearsall 56-13 in its district opener last week, while Devine (4-2, 0-1) fell to Carrizo Springs 33-26.
Roosevelt vs. Clark, 7 p.m. Saturday at Comalander Stadium: The Cougars (3-3, 2-2) can take a big leap toward earning their first playoff berth since 2013 when they face off vs. Roosevelt in a District 28-6A matchup. Clark already has a head-to-head tiebreaker over Madison and a win this weekend would give it an edge vs. another team that it is battling for a postseason spot. Roosevelt (3-4, 2-3) has lost two in a row, falling to Brandeis and Johnson during the past two weeks.
Tale of the tape
Fredericksburg running back Jesse Leija vs. Austin LBJ defense: A junior, Leija has rushed for 809 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 8.3 yards per carry. He could play a crucial role as the Battlin’ Billies (4-2, 1-0) host Austin LBJ (6-0, 1-0) in a District 13-4A-I showdown. Austin LBJ is No. 1 in Texas Football/Associated Press Class 4A Division I state rankings. The Jaguars, who already has wins over Waco La Vega and Liberty Hill, defeated Canyon Lake 34-28 but allowed 304 rushing yards.
