Floresville at Alamo Heights, 7 p.m. Friday: The Mules begin pursuit of a second straight District 15-5A-II championship when it hosts Floresville in a battle of unbeaten teams at Orem Stadium.
Alamo Heights (5-0) went unblemished in five league contests a year ago, recovering from a 1-2 start in coach Ron Rittimann’s first season at the helm. The Mules stopped Floresville 28-17 in last year’s district opener.
Both teams had a bye a week ago and are playing for the first time in two weeks. Alamo Heights handcuffed 2020 Class 4A Division II state semifinalist Wimberley 7-0, allowing only 200 yards.
Floresville (5-0) has been impressive in its non-district slate, defeating Southwest, Southside, La Vernia, Antonian and Southwest Legacy. Three of the victories were decided by three points or fewer.
Running back Dareion Murphy and quarterback Braedon Fuller have provided Floresville a potent 1-2 punch. Murphy has rushed for nearly 700 yards and 12 touchdowns and Fuller has passed for 800 yards and 10 scores.
Notable games
Clemens at Smithson Valley, 7 p.m. Friday: The Buffaloes (2-3) have rebounded after a 0-3 start, opening District 27-6A play with wins over South San and Judson. They look to continue their winning ways on the road against unbeaten Smithson Valley (5-0), which has toppled Wagner and New Braunfels to begin league play.
New Braunfels vs. Steele, 7 p.m. Friday at Lehnhoff Stadium: The Unicorns (4-1) suffered their first loss two weeks ago and now look to regain their footing against unbeaten Steele (5-0) in another high-profile District 27-6A contest. The Knights edged New Braunfels 22-21 a year ago, winning on a 1-yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion on the final play.
Holmes vs. Marshall, 7 p.m. Saturday at Farris Stadium: Two teams with proud histories but who have struggled lately square off in a matchup that could have both District 29-6A championship and playoff implications. Holmes (4-1 overall, 2-1 in district) seeks only its third five-win season in the last 20 years, while Marshall (5-1, 3-1) looks to strengthened its grip on its first playoff berth in nearly a decade.
Tale of the tape
Poteet running back Ernie Davila vs. Jourdanton defense: A senior, Davila rushed for 302 yards last week in a 50-7 win over Lytle and now has more than 1,200 for the season and 5,000 for his career at Poteet (5-1 overall, 2-0 in district). Jourdanton (3-3, 2-0), which has won three straight, limited a Marion team that entered last week’s game averaging 46.8 points to a season-low 14. This District 14-3A-I encounter is at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Poteet.
Devine offense vs. Carrizo Springs defense: Devine (4-1) is averaging 39 points per game but should get its stiffest test against Carrizo Springs (5-0) in a District 15-4A-II opener. Carrizo Springs is yielding 4.8 points per contest and already has recorded four shutouts. The teams square off at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Carrizo Springs.
