H.S. football: Breaking down this week’s top area games, key matchups and tidbits

Marquee game
Falls City at Poth, 7:30 p.m. Friday:
The annual “Polish Bowl” is a showdown between two state-ranked teams. Poth is No. 10 in Class 3A Division II and Falls City is No. 6 in 2A Division II in the Texas Football magazine/Associated Press polls.
Poth has won the past two meetings between the teams by a combined score of 99-8, including a 58-0 decision a year ago.

Notable games
Judson at Austin Lake Travis, 7:30 p.m. Friday:
Another week, another encounter with a state-ranked opponent for the Rockets. This time, No. 17 Judson travels to face No. 7 Austin Lake Travis in a showdown of programs that each has won six state championships. Lake Travis leads the series 4-3 and has won the past three meetings.

Reagan vs. Steele, 7 p.m. Friday at Lehnhoff Stadium: The Knights seek a 2-0 start for the second time in three seasons. They also accomplished the feat in 2019. Reagan, the reigning District 28-6A champion, tries to avoid a 0-2 start.

Madison at Smithson Valley, 7 p.m. Friday: These former district foes enter this Week 2 contest off wins in which their defenses starred. Madison’s defense yielded a field goal in a 14-5 win vs. Clemens, while Smithson Valley forced three turnovers in topping Warren 32-13.

New Braunfels at Seguin, 7 p.m. Friday: One of the state’s oldest rivalry, these teams will meet for the 95th straight season and for the 109th time overall. New Braunfels has won seven straight in the series, including last year’s 35-20 decision.

La Vernia at Navarro, 7:30 p.m. Friday: Both clubs looked to get on track after season-opening losses — Navarro fell to Port Lavaca Calhoun 33-28, La Vernia was toppled by Cuero 62-7 — in a matchup of programs that annually among the area’s best in Class 4A.

Clark at New Braunfels Canyon, 7:30 p.m. Friday: Clark defeated Harlan 28-14 last week, its first season-opening win since 2009. New Braunfels Canyon lost its first game under new coach Travis Bush, falling to East Central 34-17.

Tale of the tape
Southside quarterback Richard Torres vs. Somerset secondary:
A Nebraska commit, Torres threw for 302 yards and eight touchdowns during a 62-14 triumph vs. Brownsville Lopez. Somerset yielded 122 passing yards and hauled in two interceptions in 36-22 win vs. Brackenridge.

S.A. Veterans Memorial RB JC Solitaire vs. Taft defense: A senior, Soliataire rushed for 120 yards and a TD as the Patriots rolled up nearly 500 yards of total offense in a 55-20 win vs. Del Rio. Taft allowed only 195 yards in a 37-20 win vs. Seguin.
