Spotlight game
Wimberley at Navarro, 7:30 p.m. Friday: To simply put it, the District 14-4A II championship is likely on the line.
Both teams have been lighting up scoreboards lately. Navarro (5-2 overall, 3-0 in district) has tallied a combined 257 points in its past three games, averaging 85.7 during the stretch. The Panthers defeated Manor New Tech (81-0), Austin Eastside Memorial (94-0) and Austin Achieve (82-7).
A state finalist a year ago, Wimberley (7-1, 2-0) defeated Manor New Tech 88-0 two weeks ago.
This will be the teams’ third meeting over the past two seasons. Wimberley won 42-14 in the regional final, avenging a regular-season setback to Navarro by the identical score.
Notable games
O’Connor vs. Harlan, 7 p.m. Saturday at Farris Stadium: Entering this season, most figured this game would be meaningful. The prevailing sentiment, though, was probably that it would factor in who won the District 29-6A title. It instead could determine who makes and misses out on a postseason berth. Both squads rebounded with wins last week after opening league competition with losses.
New Braunfels Canyon at Dripping Springs, 7:30 p.m. Friday: The Cougars (3-0) look to extend to a dramatic turnaround when they travel for a District 12-5A I opener. A year ago, Canyon finished 0-10 competing in a Class 6A district with the likes of Judson, Clemens, Steele and Smithson Valley. Now in 5A, Canyon is on a roll.
Canyon Lake at Fredericksburg, 7:30 p.m. Friday: This matchup looks as if it could have playoff implications for District 13-4A I. Both squads have had roller-coaster seasons. Fredericksburg (4-3, 0-2) started 3-0, split a pair of one-point games, before dropping its first two district contests. Canyon Lake (3-4, 1-1), likewise, has had its ups and downs, and last week earned a district victory via forfeit because of COVID concerns.
Tale of the tape
Stevens QB KK Brashears vs. Brennan defense: Brashears has amassed 860 yards of total offense (672 rushing and 188 passing) and 10 touchdowns in helping the Falcons soar out to a 3-0 start going into Friday’s District 29-6A showdown at Farris Stadium.
Stevens is averaging 35.8 points but should get its stiffest test to date against Brennan (3-0 overall, 2-0 in district), which is allowing nine points and 218.3 yards per contest. Defensive backs Tyler Turner and Caleb McGarity have accounted for a combined three interceptions.
Clemens QB Max Didomenico vs. Smithson Valley DE Trey Moore: A senior, Didomenico has been a thorn for the Rangers the past two seasons. In 2018, in his first start, he rushed for 243 yards and two touchdowns in a 19-13 win. A year ago, he rushed for 149 yards and a score in a 15-7 victory. Didomenico, who has thrown for 554 yards and five TDs, leads an offense that has averaged 31.5 points in its last two games.
Moore paces a defense that yields 116.7 passing yards going into Friday’s contest at Lehnhoff Stadium.
Both teams are coming off losses — Smithson Valley 27-24 in overtime to Wagner two weeks ago and Clemens 34-28 last week to Judson. Smithson Valley was idle last week after its game vs. New Braunfels was postponed because of COVID concerns.
