District 27-6A, since its inception more than 40 years ago as a league comprised primarily of North East ISD schools, has been a cut above the rest of the San Antonio-area girls soccer landscape.
Madison has won two UIL state championships. Churchill, Reagan, MacArthur and Johnson each have made multiple appearances at the state tournament. LEE has twice advanced to a regional final. With each iteration of the district over the decades, including the additions of Smithson Valley, Clark, New Braunfels and Brandeis, the stakes have grown, and the margin for error has lessened. There have often been more playoff-caliber teams than playoff spots.
Every inch matters. Each bounce of the ball can resonate. A fine line has existed in determining which schools made the playoffs and which ones were left at home. The gap was displayed again on an unseasonably warm afternoon on Friday at Northside ISD’s Hardin Complex.
In a showdown between two of the three teams tied for first place in 27-6A, Clark made the most of its opponent’s defensive miscue to collect a 1-0 win vs. previously unbeaten Reagan. The Cougars (15-2-1 overall, 5-0-1 in league play) earned their first win vs. Reagan (12-1-2, 4-1-1) since a 3-2 decision on Feb. 26, 2021. They are tied with Johnson (11-2-1, 5-0-1) for first place.
“This is a hard district,” Clark coach Diana Driggers said. “We don’t really have a chance to relax at all. Anybody can win on any day in this district. It’s making sure you continue to do the right things; the kids keep working, and that they dig deep. On a day like today, it’s hot. We’ve been playing in 40-degree weather, and now we’re playing in 80-degree weather. You just have to be prepared to roll with it. You’ve got to take advantage of the chances that you have, pressing to make sure that ball keeps going.”
Clark, which fell one win shy of a playoff berth a year ago, prevailed when Reagan accidentally passed a ball its own goal with eight minutes left in the first half.
Reagan, which announced itself as a serious contender to make a deep playoff run by sandwiching wins vs. 2025 Class 6A Division I state finalist Austin Lake Travis (1-0) and 6A Division II state runner-up Houston Stratford (4-1) around a 1-1 draw with 2024 6A D-I state finalist Austin Westlake at the Hill Country Prep Showcase on Jan. 15-17, dominated possession but found few quality looks against a stiff Clark defense paced by Shalon Roberts. Reagan had outscored its opponents 62-3 entering Friday’s contest.
Clark goalkeeper Avery Palmer made a handful of saves, including one on a shot by Brooke Benne only 28 seconds into the contest. Reagan had one final chance for a tying goal when referees added time after the clock continued to run after a late foul was called and a yellow card was shown.
A Reagan free kick with 10 seconds remaining was off target as time expired, and Clark recorded its 13th shutout in 18 matches.
“This team is so coachable,” Driggers said. “Everything is, ‘What can I learn here? What’s the next thing that I can do? How can I help my team?’ They definitely play together. They’re playing for each other.”
