Alamo Heights outside hitter Kylie Wickley was named to Prep Volleyball’s Soph 79 team, which recognizes the nation’s top high school players in the Class of 2022. She was the lone area player to make the first team and one of three to make the squad.
Brandeis’ Jalyn Gibson and Carlee Pharris, both TCU commits, earned honorable mention.
Wickley, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter, battled back from a broken right knee cap to help lead Alamo Heights to its first UIL Class 5A state tournament appearance. She amassed 219 kills — 67 during the playoffs — 182 digs and a .310 hitting percentage en route to being named to Prep Volleyball’s All-America team.
Alamo Heights, in its first season under coach Alex Bothe, defeated Somerset in bidistrict, Kerrville Tivy in the second round, Harlan in the third round, Corpus Christi Flour Bluff in the Region IV-5A semifinals and Dripping Springs in the regional final without losing a set.
The Mules won 22 of their final 23 matches, the lone setback coming vs. Canyon Randall in the state semifinals at Culwell Center in Garland.
Gibson, a 6-foot outside hitter, notched 517 kills, 515 digs, 53 blocks and 36 aces. A 6-foot setter/outside hitter, Pharris tallied 765 assists, 355 digs, 342 kills, a school-record 101 aces and 79 blocks.
